  Title Converting existing natural gas pipelines to hydrogen transport: state-of-the-art

  Abstract HYDROGEN IS AN IDEAL REPLACEMENT for fossil fuels such as natural gas and oil and receives a lot of attention nowadays. The application spectrum of hydrogen as replacement of natural gas is large, from hydrogen fuel cell vehicles to use in industry and heating of domestic and commercial buildings.

With increasing demand and supply of hydrogen in the future, the question arises how hydrogen can be safely transported over large distances. The existing natural gas network could possibly be used to transport the hydrogen gas and could thereby accelerate the introduction of hydrogen. It is therefore important to investigate whether the existing gas infrastructure can be made suitable for the transport of hydrogen.

This article discusses the possible challenges when adding hydrogen into existing natural gas grids and the required next steps.
