  Title Analysis of welded line pipes toughness response to different seam heat treatments

  Abstract ONE OF THE MOST DIFFICULT quality requirements of Electric Welded (EW) pipes is related to the impact toughness of the weld area. Toughness in the longitudinal seam is affected not only by the casual presence of defects, typically associated to steel cleanliness and welding conditions, but also by a combination of metallurgical processes which define the material microstructure. Weld microstructure and properties depend on steel chemistry, hot rolling process, welding conditions, and also on the localized seam heat treatment. In this work, the focus is on the seam localized heat treatment, particularly on cooling conditions after austenitization, and how these affect impact properties. The response in terms of microstructure, hardness and toughness to different cooling rates was studied for several X65 steels for welded line pipes, after an austenitization condition similar to the one applied in a typical seam heat treatment. The thermal cycles were applied by means of a Gleeble 3500 thermo- mechanical simulator on specimens of both base steel (tube body) and EW seam. The results were useful to build up rules for the proper selection of the steel chemistry, as well as for the optimization of processing conditions that guarantee weld quality consistency.
